Welcome to MSU Extension’s Community Resources Program
The Community Resources Program provides information, education, resources, technical assistance and services to help create healthy, safe, thriving Montana communities. A major activity of the Community Resources Program involves providing assistance in developing and securing public and private funds, primarily from grants, to support programming efforts of MSU Extension and local communities.
Specific activities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- monitoring needs and interest areas and connecting with possible funding sources
- reviewing government, foundation and corporate sources of funding, reports and publications
- posting grant opportunities on the MSU Extension website
- providing grant writing and grant management training seminars and workshops
- providing technical assistance with individual proposals, including review and comments prior to submission
The Community Resources Program fosters and encourages community renewal and transformation that results in healthier communities. In this respect, the Community Resources Program is well aligned with the national health agenda, Healthy People 2020, and the newly formed eXtension Community of Practice (CoP) Creating Healthy Communities (CHC). A national plan to create healthy communities originated in 1979 with the report Healthy People: The Surgeon General’s Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. Following this groundbreaking event, the federal government launched a series of 10 year plans to improve the health of the nation, first with Healthy People 2000 in 1990, followed by Healthy People 2010 in 1999 and Healthy People 2020 in 2010. Healthy communities cannot exist without the necessary elements that offer people fair and equal opportunity to achieve their full health potential through access to known pre-requisites for good health and disease prevention. Creating healthy communities is a complex endeavor that requires community-based collaboration around a shared vision. Communities need to provide people with the knowledge, skills, abilities, resources and motivation to make healthy choices, engage in healthy meaningful relationships and take a more active role in their health care decision-making and self-care management.
